Gimpo vs. Incheon: Why This Matters

Gimpo International Airport (GMP, 김포공항) is Seoul's secondary airport, used mainly for domestic flights and short-haul international routes to Japan and China. It sits inside Gangseo-gu (강서구), well within Seoul's city limits — a completely different situation from Incheon Airport, which is on an island roughly an hour outside the city.

Because Gimpo is so close to downtown, almost every transport option here is faster and cheaper than the Incheon equivalent. The subway alone gets you to major neighborhoods in well under an hour.

Option 1: Subway (Line 5, Line 9, AREX, Gimpo Gold Line)

Gimpo Airport Station (김포공항역) is a major transit hub with four connecting lines, all accessible directly from the arrivals area.

• Line 9 (express) – The fastest route toward Gangnam. Express trains skip stops and reach Gangnam-adjacent stations in around 40-45 minutes. Not every train is express, so check the platform display.
• Line 5 – Useful for Yeouido, Gwanghwamun, and eastern Seoul. Slower but very direct, with no transfers needed for many central stops.
• AREX (Airport Railway Express) – The same line that runs from Incheon also stops at Gimpo, connecting to Hongdae/Digital Media City and Seoul Station in about 15-20 minutes.
• Gimpo Gold Line – A local light rail line useful mainly for connections within Gangseo-gu; most visitors won't need it.

Option 2: Airport Limousine Bus

Limousine buses depart from just outside the arrivals hall and run directly to major hotel districts, including Myeongdong, Gangnam, and Hongdae, often with multiple stops along a fixed route.

Fares run around ₩7,000-10,000 depending on the route, and travel time is typically 40-70 minutes depending on traffic and your destination. Buses are comfortable with luggage racks, which makes them a solid choice if you're carrying multiple large bags or traveling with kids.

The downside: Seoul traffic can add real delay during rush hour (roughly 7:30-9:30 AM and 6-8 PM), so the subway is often faster even though the bus feels more relaxed.

Option 3: Taxi

Taxis line up right outside arrivals. A regular taxi (orange or silver) to central Seoul — Myeongdong, Hongdae, or Gangnam — usually costs around ₩20,000-35,000 and takes 25-45 minutes without heavy traffic.

Deluxe (black) taxis cost roughly 1.5-2x more but offer more space and English-speaking drivers in some cases. Given how close Gimpo is to downtown, a taxi here is far more reasonable than one from Incheon, and it's a genuinely practical option for groups of three or four splitting the fare, or for late-night arrivals when buses run infrequently.

Pre-booked private transfers (via hotel concierge or third-party booking sites) pick you up curbside with a driver holding a name sign. Given Gimpo's short distance to the city, prices tend to run around ₩40,000-60,000 for a standard sedan into central Seoul — noticeably cheaper than the equivalent Incheon transfer.

This option makes the most sense for late-night arrivals, families with young kids, or anyone who simply doesn't want to navigate transit after a flight. It's not necessary for most solo or budget travelers given how easy the subway connection is.
