Why You Can't Just Use Google Maps in Korea

Google Maps works for finding places in Korea, but it cannot give you walking, driving, or public transit directions inside the country. This is due to South Korean map data export laws tied to national security concerns near the DMZ. Google has never been granted a license to route detailed map data out of Korea, so the "Directions" button either does nothing useful or gives you a straight blue line with no real route.

This catches almost every first-time visitor off guard. You search for a restaurant, tap directions, and get nothing. The fix is to use one of Korea's domestic map apps instead — Naver Map (also called Naver Map & Navigation, 네이버 지도) or Kakao Map. Naver Map is generally considered more foreigner-friendly because its English interface and search are slightly more polished.

Setting Up Naver Map in English

1. Download "Naver Map" from the App Store or Google Play (search "Naver Map" — not "Naver" or "Naver Cafe," which are different apps).
2. Open the app. You can browse without an account, but signing in with an email lets you save favorite places across devices.
3. Go to the hamburger menu (☰) in a corner, then Settings (설정).
4. Look for Language and select English. If the app opened in Korean, the settings icon is usually a gear symbol — tap through menus by shape if you can't read the labels yet.
5. Restart the app if the interface doesn't fully switch.

Not every label converts perfectly — some user reviews and small business names may still show in Korean — but core navigation, search, and directions display in English.

Searching for Places: English Names vs. Korean Addresses

Naver Map's search handles English reasonably well for major places (hotels, landmarks, subway stations, chain restaurants). For smaller cafes, restaurants, or newly opened shops, English search sometimes fails.

Workarounds that consistently work:

• Copy the Korean name or address from Instagram, a blog, or the restaurant's own signage photo and paste it directly into the Naver Map search bar.
• Use the phone number search. Many small businesses in Korea are more reliably found by their phone number than their name.
• Search nearby landmarks first (a subway exit, a department store), then browse the map visually to spot the place.
• If you have a Korean address like "서울 중구 명동길 26," paste the whole string — Naver Map parses Korean addresses far better than romanized ones.

Getting Subway, Bus, and Walking Directions

This is where Naver Map earns its place on your phone.

• Tap a destination pin, then tap the directions icon (usually a small route/car icon).
• Choose from Transit (대중교통), Walk, Car, or Bike.
• Transit results show exact subway line colors and numbers, which exit to use, transfer stations, and real-time next-departure estimates for buses.
• Fares are shown in the results — expect around ₩1,400-1,600 for a single subway/bus ride within Seoul with a T-money card, slightly more without one.
• Walking directions include estimated time and will route you through pedestrian paths and underground passages that Google Maps in Korea simply cannot draw.

For subway-heavy days, cross-check unusually long transfers against the official Seoul Metro app or station signage, since transfer times at large stations (like 강남 or 고속터미널) can be longer than the app estimates due to walking distance between platforms.

Naver Map vs. Kakao Map vs. Google Maps

A practical approach many visitors use: Google Maps to discover and save places (it has richer English reviews and photos), then Naver Map to actually navigate there.

Saving Places and Building a Trip Map

Naver Map lets you bookmark locations into folders (like "Restaurants" or "Day 2"). Tap a pin, then the save/heart icon, and assign it to a folder. This is useful for building out a personal map before your trip — search your hotel, planned restaurants, and attractions in advance and save them so you're not searching from scratch with spotty subway wifi.

A few practical notes:

• Download the app and switch to English before you land, since airport wifi can be inconsistent.
• Naver Map's offline map download exists but is limited in coverage; don't rely on it as a full offline solution.
• Battery drains fast with GPS + transit apps running — carry a portable charger for long sightseeing days.

Common Mistakes Foreigners Make

• Typing romanized names with inconsistent spelling. "Myeongdong" vs "Myungdong" can return different results — try both, or paste Korean text instead.
• Ignoring exit numbers. Korean subway stations often have 4-10 exits, and Naver Map will specify the correct one (e.g., "Exit 6") — using the wrong exit can add 10-15 minutes of walking around a city block.
• Assuming Google Maps ride-hailing/transit will work. It won't. Switch apps early to avoid frustration mid-trip.
• Not updating the app. Older versions occasionally have outdated transit schedules, especially after fare or route changes.
