What Gangnam Actually Is (and Isn't)

Gangnam (강남) means "south of the river," and it refers to a broad, wealthy district of southern Seoul, not a single street or landmark. PSY's 2012 hit made the name globally famous, but there's no "Gangnam Style" attraction to visit — the song was satire about status-obsessed lifestyle culture here.

What you'll actually find: glass office towers, underground shopping tunnels, cosmetic surgery clinics with English signage, K-pop entertainment company buildings, upscale cafés, and one of Seoul's densest nightlife strips around Gangnam Station. It's less historic than Jongno or Insadong, less indie-cool than Hongdae, but it's where a lot of modern Korean consumer culture and business life actually happens.

Getting There and Getting Around

Gangnam Station (강남역, Line 2, Exits 10-12 for the main strip) is the busiest hub. Sinsa Station (신사역, Line 3) puts you near Garosugil. Apgujeong and Apgujeong Rodeo stations serve the fashion district. Samseong Station (삼성역, Line 2, Exit 5-6) is the direct entrance to COEX.

The area is fully walkable within each sub-district but spread out overall — plan on subway hops between COEX, Garosugil, and the Gangnam Station strip rather than walking the whole thing. COEX Mall and the Underground City

COEX (코엑스) is one of Asia's largest underground malls, connected directly to Samseong Station. Highlights:

It connects underground to the Convention & Exhibition Center and, via a long tunnel, toward Bongeunsa Temple (봉은사) — a working Buddhist temple that feels like a genuine break from the glass towers, free to enter, about a 10-minute walk from COEX.

Garosugil and Sinsa: Shopping and Café Culture

Garosugil (가로수길, "tree-lined street") runs from Sinsa Station and is known for boutique fashion stores, flagship cosmetic brand shops, and dessert cafés. It's more relaxed and photogenic than the Gangnam Station strip, with tree-lined side alleys worth wandering.

Parallel side streets have smaller independent boutiques and coffee shops with less foot traffic than the main road — worth a detour if the main street feels too crowded on weekends.

Gangnam Station Strip: Food and Nightlife

The stretch between Gangnam Station Exits 6 and 11 is the district's nightlife core: barbecue restaurants, hof (beer/fried chicken) bars, noraebang (karaoke), and late-night street food stalls. It gets extremely crowded on Friday and Saturday nights, especially after 10 PM.

Fans often come to Gangnam for entertainment company buildings — SM, JYP, and others have offices in or near the district, though most don't offer public tours or store-front access beyond a gift shop. Don't expect to see idols; these are corporate offices, not attractions. Check company social media before visiting, as locations and public access change.
