Thai Massage in Hongdae: Booking, Prices & Etiquette

Hongdae is one of the densest massage districts in Seoul. Most of what's on offer is Thai-style oil massage: a private room, a bed instead of a floor mat, and pressure work through fabric rather than the wet, skin-on-skin scrub of a Korean bathhouse. Walk-in or reservation: what actually happens

Hongdae has dozens of Thai massage storefronts within a few minutes of Hongik University Station (Line 2, Airport Railroad, Gyeongui-Jungang Line). Many cluster around the old parking-lot street north of the university gate. Most take walk-ins during normal opening hours. Just show up. Tell the front desk how many people and how many minutes.

Thursday through Saturday evenings are different. Popular shops fill their tables by 8 or 9pm. A walk-in then can mean a 20 to 40 minute wait, or a slot pushed back an hour. Weekday afternoons rarely have that problem.

Booking ahead removes the guesswork. Search the shop's name on Naver Map, tap the reservation button if one appears, or message the shop's KakaoTalk channel with your preferred time. Platforms built for foreign visitors, like Creatrip, Waug and Trazy, list Hongdae shops in English. You get photos of the actual room, a real review count, and a price you pay online before you arrive. That last part matters. A locked-in price avoids any confusion at the counter over what a "60-minute course" does or doesn't include.

Prices by duration

Rates vary shop to shop. But the pattern across Hongdae listings is consistent enough to plan around.

Cassia Thai Massage's Hongdae branch, for example, lists sessions starting from about $39 USD (roughly ₩54,000) through Creatrip, with a small further discount at the membership rate. That gives a reasonable anchor for what a pre-booked, platform-discounted 60-minute session costs before any walk-in mark-up. Walk-in counter prices tend to run higher than the online rate. Booking through a platform or the shop's own Naver page is rarely a bad idea, even if you plan to just show up.

What to expect once you're inside

You'll usually change into disposable shorts or keep your underwear on, then lie on a massage bed under a sheet, not a floor mat like a jjimjilbang. Staff work oil into the skin through the fabric or directly on exposed limbs, focusing on shoulders, back, legs and feet. There's no scrubbing, no exfoliation, and often no shower stall afterward, so plan to leave with a bit of oil on your skin. Ask the front desk if a shower is included; some higher-end rooms have one, most don't.

Tipping isn't expected. Korea doesn't run on a tipping culture. Pressing extra cash into a therapist's hand can actually confuse them. If the pressure is too hard or too soft, say so. "Se게 (segeh)" means stronger, "약하게 (yakhage)" means gentler. A thumbs up or down works too.

A legitimate shop posts its price list near the entrance and keeps a laminated English or Chinese menu at the desk. If someone at the door starts describing services that aren't on that printed menu, leave. Same if pricing only gets explained once you're already in the room. Reputable Hongdae shops don't need that kind of pressure to fill a table.

Booking apps vs just showing up: which to pick

If you're solo, flexible on time, and visiting on a weekday, walking in works fine and saves the small booking-platform markup some shops build into their listed price. If you're travelling as a couple, want a specific evening slot, or you're only in Hongdae for one night, book ahead. A wasted trip to a fully booked shop isn't worth the risk. Booking a Thai massage through Creatrip or a similar platform locks your slot and shows you the actual room in photos first. You get a price in your own currency before you commit.

Where to look in Hongdae

Most shops sit within a 10-minute walk of Hongik University Station exits 8 and 9, spreading north along the parking-lot street and the side streets running toward Yeonnam-dong.
